NCR INNOVATES TO IMPROVE MORALE OF RUNNING STAFF TO ENHANCE SAFETY: INTRODUCES THE CONCEPT OF GROSS HAPPINESS INDEX (GHI)

In a bid to improve safety, the North Central Railway (NCR), under the guidance of its General Manager, Shri M.C.Chauhan has come up with a unique innovation to boost the morale of its running staff (Loco Pilots and Assistant Loco Pilots). For the first time since its inception in the year 2003, NCR has introduced the concept of Gross Happiness Index (GHI) in order to measure the satisfaction level of its running staff with the facilities and services provided in the running rooms. A ‘Running Room’ is the facility that is provided to the LPs and ALPs for availing rest after their prescribed duty hours. Proper rest is extremely important for Loco Pilots (LPs)/Assistant Loco Pilots(ALP) as their work is of constant concentration and any lapse in concentration and alertness by them can lead to a mishap. It is in this context that the condition of running rooms and the facilities provided in the same become very important in ensuring safety. The introduction of the concept of the Gross Happiness Index (GHI) has been done in order to measure the level of satisfaction of the LPs/ALPs with the condition & facilities provided in the running rooms of NCR. Under GHI, running rooms will be evaluated over 10 criteria, which are as follows:

1)System of room allotment by the crew lobby

2)Quality of reception

3)Cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms

4)Cleanliness of the toilets/bathrooms and availability of water round the clock in them

5)Quality of linen and its washing

6)Behaviour of the housekeeping staff

7)Behaviour of Mess staff

8)Time taken in preparation of food

9)Quality of food

10)Overall upkeep and cleanliness of the environment of the running room

GHI is calculated on a scale of 1 to 10 for each of these parameters. The marks obtained by individual running rooms across these ten parameters are averaged in order to arrive at the overall GHI for any particular running room. Marks are given across the ten parameters on the basis of the feedback of the running staff using the facilities of the running room. The GHI scale is as follows:

COLOR CODE

0.6-6.9

Very Good

Speaking on the unique initiative, GM/NCR says that NCR is committed to providing conducive environment, pleasant stay and confidence boost for the next upcoming trip of the running staff availing rest in the running rooms. “We strongly believe that happy and satisfied staff is the backbone of efficient and safe train operations and the concept of GHI has been introduced to measure the level of happiness in our running staff. once we receive the evaluation of all the running rooms of NCR across all the 10 parameters of GHI, we shall strive to transform ‘Good’ into ‘very good’, and ‘very good’ into ‘excellent”’ he adds. The running staff of NCR have expressed their happiness with the introduction of GHI and are of the view that it will result in the overall improvement in the quality of their experience in the running rooms and consequently in the quality of their rest.
